Chapter 15

Marley

The weekend passed way too quickly.

It wasn’t like me to think that way right at the beginning of the school year, but I felt like I’d lived an entire month in the last five days. Regardless, I’d had just the weekend I’d needed. I read romance novels, drank wine, and talked to Lana over the phone about Travis—which was more like talking to a stone wall, to be honest.

Still, when my alarm went off on Monday morning for my daily jog, I ignored it. My bed was far too seductive to leave behind, and I was completely at its mercy. Even when my second alarm went off to get ready for work, I snoozed it twice.

As I brushed my teeth, I wondered if I wasn’t sleeping as deeply because I was subconsciously hyper-alert after the break-ins at my house.

Whatever it was, I needed to do my best to act as normally as I could, even though I felt like a zombie. I was looking forward to one thing, though—seeing Cole when he dropped off Noah.

I tried to tell myself that I wasn’t, but as I welcomed the kids into the classroom, I kept looking for him every time the door to the playground opened. I wanted to smack myself. What was I doing? I could lose my job thinking like this. Hell, it was a miracle I hadn’t already lost my job.

Finally, he appeared, holding the door open for Noah.

Our eyes met as Noah ran onto the blacktop, and my heart lodged in my throat. It felt like I was reuniting with someone after weeks or months instead of a couple of days. In a moment of utter surprise, I realized that I had missed him.

I had missed him over the weekend.

I raised my hand to wave, but before I could get a chance, Noah rushed me at full speed.

“Noah, wait!” Cole called.

It was too late. Noah tackled my legs with enough force that I almost toppled over, even though he was only five. Giggling, I patted his back.

“Hey, Noah!”

He nuzzled my leg. “I missed you, Miss Cage!” he said, nuzzling my leg.

I picked him up. “I missed you too, Noah.”

Cole approached—his eyebrows high as he rubbed the back of his head. “Sorry about that. He’s been asking about you all weekend.”

“It’s fine,” I said. “How was your weekend?”

“Uh, it was good. Yeah, had a day out with Noah—met a potential big client. Yours?”

“Too short.”

The conversation trailed off into an awkward silence. I set Noah down on his feet. “Why don’t you go play inside?”

“Okay!” he said, turning to hug his dad goodbye. In the nature of all five-year-olds, he raced from one place to another.

I looked around to make sure no adults were within earshot. Then I looked up at Cole. “Is everything okay? You seem a little distant,” I said. “Did something happen?”

“I think you need to be a little careful about how excited you get about seeing me when you’re here at work, you know?” he said.
